Hawkesbury – The Friends of the Macdonell-Williamson House today launched the Mobile Inter-Generational Genealogy Outreach Project, thanks to a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Jean-Marc Lalonde, MPP for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, was on hand to congratulate members of the Friends.
“This grant is a great investment in our community,” said MPP Lalonde. “I am happy to see that the Ontario Trillium Foundation has contributed to this important project that brings together our seniors and youth through the promotion of our local history.”
The one-year grant will be used to establish a bilingual mobile genealogy project that will involve seniors and high school students in the research and documentation of their family histories by attending workshops and tutorials on the uses of technology for genealogy research.
“By encouraging seniors, with the involvement of young people, to document their life stories, we will be enriching the heritage of our region by helping present and future generations become closely connected,” said Elizabeth Muir, CEO of the volunteer group.
”This is a project that touches the heart, with seniors and young people – sometimes their grandchildren – working in harmony within our community to produce their archival family trees,” said Valerie Verity, Ontario Co-President of the Friends. “Is it any wonder that the Ontario Trillium Foundation responded so positively!”
